Collect some items which will be needed to create shelter. Although the terrain may lend itself to helping with supplies a person should be as prepared as possible in case there are no trees. Shelter can be found under protruding cliffs, but collecting some long straight sticks can serve to create framing for spreading a tarp over to keep off the rain.
Purchase foods that are easily dried out to safely retain their flavor. Such foods as fruits and vegetables are easily dehydrated and need no refrigeration. Certain meats can also be prepared this way, and all of them can be tied together with string to keep them bundled and convenient to carry. After arriving in the wilderness, find a water source where you can see fish swimming around and use your casting or fly rod to catch them for meals.
Pack up basic health needs. Two days worth of clothing is enough to last for two weeks if rinsed in the nearby stream or river. Baking soda can be taken to brush your teeth, and help in relieving indigestion. Tree roots can be frayed to create a toothbrush when the store bought one wears out. Such things as bitter root and lavender grow wild and can be used to ease nausea.
Pack up a minimum number of lures and a fishing rod. Live bait is not always necessary to catch fish, but earth worms are easy to find under rocks. Your favorite fishing lures may eventually break and no longer be of use. Certain insects can be captured to use as bait and kept in a cheese cloth bag which is tied at the top.
Delegate responsibilities and chain of command. When living off of the land it is important that everyone is in agreement as to what duties must be done. Elect who is going to be in charge so that there is a leader, but keep in mind that it takes everyone to survive. Working together each day is crucial to the health and safety of the group.
